What Is the Greenhouse Effect?

The greenhouse warming effect is a natural phenomenon whereby solar radiation coming from the sun travels down through the atmosphere and gets absorbed by the surfaces of Earth. Earth, as it absorbs solar energy, also emits infrared radiation. Specific gases present in the atmosphere absorb some of the outgoing heat, thus stopping it from escaping into space. They then reradiate it downward back onto the Earth, keeping the planet warm enough for life to exist.

While the natural greenhouse effect is in many ways essential for the sustenance of life, human activities have amplified it, thereby setting in motion the process of global warming and climatic changes.

Basic Working of the Greenhouse Effect

  1. Solar energy strikes Earth’s surface and warms it.
  2. Infrared radiation is emitted by the warmed surface toward the atmosphere.
  3. Greenhouse gases absorb some of this radiation, bounce it back, and retain heat in the lower atmosphere.

The analogy is like wrapping the Earth with a thermal blanket: It maintains temperature regulation, but if the blanket becomes too thick, there can be overheating.

Gases Which Are the Most Important Greenhouse Agents

  • Water Vapor: The water vapor occurs naturally and is the most abundant; it increases as the atmosphere warms.
  • Carbon Dioxide (CO₂): Primarily from fossil fuel burning and deforestation, carbon dioxide is the major human-induced greenhouse gas because of its huge quantities and its long life.
  • Methane (CH₄): Released during the production and transport of coal, oil, and natural gas, and also from agricultural activities. Its warming potential is greater than carbon dioxide, though it remains in the atmosphere for a comparatively short duration.
  • Nitrous Oxide (N₂O): Released from agricultural and industrial processes, this gas has a long life in the atmosphere with a huge warming impact.
  • Fluorinated Gases: These are synthetic gases used in industrial applications, but only in limited quantities with very high global warming potential.

Why Should It Matter?

Without the greenhouse effect, the average temperature on Earth would be about –18°C, too cold for life to exist as currently known. Due to the effects of natural greenhouse gases, the Earth maintains an average temperature of around 15°C.

But human activities have dramatically pushed the concentration of these gases, disturbing the equilibrium and disturbing it strongly. Some of the consequences of this enhanced greenhouse effect are:

  • Increment in global temperatures
  • Melting of ice caps and rising levels of the sea
  • More frequent occasions of extreme weather
  • Changes in eco-systems and biodiversity

Common Scenario

Consider different scenarios in a parked car under the bright sun. Sunlight makes its way through the windows and heats up the interior. However, heat finds it hard to escape, and the interior becomes hotter. This is how the greenhouse effect works—the difference being that it is on a planetary scale.
